ונסיב שמואל ית מנא דמשחא ואריק על רישיה ונשקיה ואמר הלא ארי משחך יי על אחסנתיה למהוי מלכא:
mlka lmhwy akhsnthyh el yy mshkhk ary hla wamr wnshqyh ryshyh el waryq dmshkha mna yth shmwal wnsyb
Then Samuel took the vial of oil and poured it on his head, then kissed him and said, “Hasn’t Yahweh anointed you to be prince over his inheritance?

במהכך יומא דין מני מלותי ותשכח תרין גברין עם קבורתא דרחל בתחום בנימן בצלצח ויימרון לך אשתכחא אתניא דאזלת למבעי יתהן והא שבק אבוך ית עיסק אתניא ויציף לכון למימר מה אעביד לברי:
lbry aebyd mh lmymr lkwn wytsyp athnya eysq yth abwk shbq wha ythhn lmbey dazlth athnya ashthkkha lk wyymrwn btsltskh bnymn bthkhwm drkhl qbwrtha em gbryn thryn wthshkkh mlwthy mny dyn ywma bmhkk
When you have departed from me today, then you will find two men by Rachel’s tomb, on the border of Benjamin at Zelzah. They will tell you, ‘The donkeys which you went to look for have been found; and behold, your father has stopped caring about the donkeys and is anxious for you, saying, “What shall I do for my son?”’

ותהך מתמן ולהלא ותיתי עד מישר תבור וישכחונך תמן תלתא גוברין דסלקין למסגד קדם יי בבית אל חד נטיל תלתא גדין וחד נטיל תלת פתין דלחם וחד נטיל גרבא דחמר:
dkhmr grba nTyl wkhd dlkhm pthyn thlth nTyl wkhd gdyn thltha nTyl khd al bbyth yy qdm lmsgd dslqyn gwbryn thltha thmn wyshkkhwnk thbwr myshr ed wthythy wlhla mthmn wthhk
“Then you will go on forward from there, and you will come to the oak of Tabor. Three men will meet you there going up to God to Bethel: one carrying three young goats, and another carrying three loaves of bread, and another carrying a container of wine.

וישאלון לך לשלם ויתנון לך תרתין גריצן דלחם ותקבל מידיהון:
mydyhwn wthqbl dlkhm grytsn thrthyn lk wythnwn lshlm lk wyshalwn
They will greet you and give you two loaves of bread, which you shall receive from their hand.

בתר כן תהך לגבעתא די בה ארונא דיי דתמן אסטרטיני פלשתאי ויהי כמיעלך תמן לקרתא ותערע סיעת ספריא נחתין מבית אסחרותא וקדמיהון נבלין ותופין וצלצלין וכנורין ואינון משבחין:
mshbkhyn waynwn wknwryn wtsltslyn wthwpyn nblyn wqdmyhwn askhrwtha mbyth nkhthyn sprya syeth wthere lqrtha thmn kmyelk wyhy plshthay asTrTyny dthmn dyy arwna bh dy lgbetha thhk kn bthr
“After that you will come to the hill of God, where the garrison of the Philistines is; and it will happen, when you have come there to the city, that you will meet a band of prophets coming down from the high place with a lute, a tambourine, a pipe, and a harp before them; and they will be prophesying.

ותשרי עלך רוח נבואה מן קדם יי ותשבח עמהון ותשתני לגבר אוחרן:
awkhrn lgbr wthshthny emhwn wthshbkh yy qdm mn nbwah rwkh elk wthshry
Then Yahweh’s Spirit will come mightily on you, then you will prophesy with them and will be turned into another man.

ויהי ארי ייתון אתיא האלן לך עביד לך מני מלכותא ארי מימרא דיי בסעדך:
bsedk dyy mymra ary mlkwtha mny lk ebyd lk haln athya yythwn ary wyhy
Let it be, when these signs have come to you, that you do what is appropriate for the occasion; for God is with you.

ותיחות קדמי לגלגלא והא אנא נחית לותך לאסקא עלון ולנכסא נכסת קודשין שבעא יומין תוריך עד מיתי לותך ואחוי לך ית דתעביד:
dthebyd yth lk wakhwy lwthk mythy ed thwryk ywmyn shbea qwdshyn nksth wlnksa elwn lasqa lwthk nkhyth ana wha lglgla qdmy wthykhwth
“Go down ahead of me to Gilgal; and behold, I will come down to you to offer burnt offerings and to sacrifice sacrifices of peace offerings. Wait seven days, until I come to you and show you what you are to do.”

והוה כד אתפני כתפיה למיזל מלות שמואל ושני ליה יי לבא אוחרנא ואתאה כל אתיא האלין ביומא ההוא:
hhwa bywma halyn athya kl wathah awkhrna lba yy lyh wshny shmwal mlwth lmyzl kthpyh athpny kd whwh
It was so, that when he had turned his back to go from Samuel, God gave him another heart; and all those signs happened that day.

ואתו לתמן לגבעתא והא סיעת ספריא לקדמותיה ושרת עלוהי רוח נבואה מן קדם יי ושבח ביניהון:
bynyhwn wshbkh yy qdm mn nbwah rwkh elwhy wshrth lqdmwthyh sprya syeth wha lgbetha lthmn wathw
When they came there to the hill, behold, a band of prophets met him; and the Spirit of God came mightily on him, and he prophesied among them.

והוה כל דידע ליה מאתמלי ומדקמוהי וחזו והא עם ספריא משבח ואמר עמא גבר לחבריה מה דין הוה לבר קיש האף שאול בספריא:
bsprya shawl hap qysh lbr hwh dyn mh lkhbryh gbr ema wamr mshbkh sprya em wha wkhzw wmdqmwhy mathmly lyh dyde kl whwh
When all who knew him before saw that, behold, he prophesied with the prophets, then the people said to one another, “What is this that has come to the son of Kish? Is Saul also among the prophets?”

ואתיב גברא מתמן ואמר ומן רבהון על כן הות למתלא האף שאול בספריא:
bsprya shawl hap lmthla hwth kn el rbhwn wmn wamr mthmn gbra wathyb
One from the same place answered, “Who is their father?” Therefore it became a proverb, “Is Saul also among the prophets?”

ופסק מלשבחא ועל לבית אסחרותא:
askhrwtha lbyth wel mlshbkha wpsq
When he had finished prophesying, he came to the high place.
14
ואמר אח אבוהי דשאול ליה ולעולימיה לאן אזלתון ואמר למבעי ית אתניא וחזינא ארי לא אשכחנא ואתינא לות שמואל:
shmwal lwth wathyna ashkkhna la ary wkhzyna athnya yth lmbey wamr azlthwn lan wlewlymyh lyh dshawl abwhy akh wamr
Saul’s uncle said to him and to his servant, “Where did you go?” He said, “To seek the donkeys. When we saw that they were not found, we came to Samuel.”

ואמר אח אבוהי דשאול חוי כען לי מה אמר לכון שמואל:
shmwal lkwn amr mh ly ken khwy dshawl abwhy akh wamr
Saul’s uncle said, “Please tell me what Samuel said to you.”

ואמר שאול לאח אבוהי חואה חוי לנא ארי אשתכחא אתניא ועל עיסק מלכותא לא חוי ליה די אמר שמואל:
shmwal amr dy lyh khwy la mlkwtha eysq wel athnya ashthkkha ary lna khwy khwah abwhy lakh shawl wamr
Saul said to his uncle, “He told us plainly that the donkeys were found.” But concerning the matter of the kingdom, of which Samuel spoke, he didn’t tell him.

וכנש שמואל ית עמא לקדם יי למצפיא:
lmtspya yy lqdm ema yth shmwal wknsh
Samuel called the people together to Yahweh to Mizpah;

ואמר לבני ישראל כדנן אמר יי אלהא דישראל אנא אסקית ית ישראל ממצרים ושיזבית יתכון מידא דמצראי ומיד כל מלכותא דדחקין יתכון:
ythkwn ddkhqyn mlkwtha kl wmyd dmtsray myda ythkwn wshyzbyth mmtsrym yshral yth asqyth ana dyshral alha yy amr kdnn yshral lbny wamr
and he said to the children of Israel, “Yahweh, the God of Israel, says ‘I brought Israel up out of Egypt and I delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of all the kingdoms that oppressed you.’

ואתון יומא דין קצתון בפולחנא דאלהכון דהוא פריק לכון מכל בישתיכון ועקתכון ואמרתון קדמוהי לית אנחנא מתפרקין אלהין מלכא תמני עלנא וכען אתעתדי קדם יי לשבטיכון ולאלפיכון:
wlalpykwn lshbTykwn yy qdm athethdy wken elna thmny mlka alhyn mthprqyn ankhna lyth qdmwhy wamrthwn weqthkwn byshthykwn mkl lkwn pryq dhwa dalhkwn bpwlkhna qtsthwn dyn ywma wathwn
But you have today rejected your God, who himself saves you out of all your calamities and your distresses; and you have said to him, ‘No! Set a king over us!’ Now therefore present yourselves before Yahweh by your tribes and by your thousands.”

וקריב שמואל ית כל שבטיא דישראל ואתאחד שבטא דבית בנימין:
bnymyn dbyth shbTa wathakhd dyshral shbTya kl yth shmwal wqryb
So Samuel brought all the tribes of Israel near, and the tribe of Benjamin was chosen.
21
וקריב ית שבטא דבנימין לזרעיתה ואתאחדת זרעית מטרי ואתאחד שאול בר קיש ובעוהי ולא אשתכח:
ashthkkh wla wbewhy qysh br shawl wathakhd mTry zreyth wathakhdth lzreythh dbnymyn shbTa yth wqryb
He brought the tribe of Benjamin near by their families and the family of the Matrites was chosen. Then Saul the son of Kish was chosen; but when they looked for him, he could not be found.

ושאילו עוד במימרא דיי האית עוד הכא גברא ואמר יי הא הוא טמיר במניא:
bmnya Tmyr hwa ha yy wamr gbra hka ewd hayth dyy bmymra ewd wshaylw
Therefore they asked of Yahweh further, “Is there yet a man to come here?” Yahweh answered, “Behold, he has hidden himself among the baggage.”

ורהטו ודברוהי מתמן ואתעתד בגו עמא ורם מכל עמא מכתפיה ולעלא:
wlela mkthpyh ema mkl wrm ema bgw wathethd mthmn wdbrwhy wrhTw
They ran and got him there. When he stood among the people, he was higher than any of the people from his shoulders and upward.

ואמר שמואל לכל עמא החזיתון די אתרעי ביה יי ארי לית דכותיה בכל עמא ויביבו כל עמא ואמרו יצלח מלכא:
mlka ytslkh wamrw ema kl wybybw ema bkl dkwthyh lyth ary yy byh athrey dy hkhzythwn ema lkl shmwal wamr
Samuel said to all the people, “Do you see him whom Yahweh has chosen, that there is no one like him among all the people?” All the people shouted and said, “Long live the king!”

ומליל שמואל עם עמא ית נימוסא דמלכא וכתב בספרא ואצנע קדם יי ושלח שמואל ית כל עמא גבר לביתיה:
lbythyh gbr ema kl yth shmwal wshlkh yy qdm watsne bspra wkthb dmlka nymwsa yth ema em shmwal wmlyl
Then Samuel told the people the regulations of the kingdom, and wrote it in a book and laid it up before Yahweh. Samuel sent all the people away, every man to his house.
26
ואף שאול אזל לביתיה לגבעתא ואזלו עמיה קצת מן עמא דחלי חטאה דאתיהב דחלא מן קדם יי בלבהון:
blbhwn yy qdm mn dkhla dathyhb khTah dkhly ema mn qtsth emyh wazlw lgbetha lbythyh azl shawl wap
Saul also went to his house in Gibeah; and the army went with him, whose hearts God had touched.
